MacDonagh Junction is the largest shopping centre in the south east. Located in the heart of Kilkenny City beside the train station, it is home to many of the top high street brands such as TK Maxx, River Island, Next, Dunne’s, Carraig Donn, A Wear, Mexx, Sisley, Josef, Pamela Scott, Champion Sports, Field’s Jewellers, Barratt’s Shoes, HMV, Eddie Rockets, K Bowl and H&M will open in autumn 2011.

MacDonagh Junction is also home to Health Express Pharmacy, The Health Store, Carphone Warehouse, Peter Mark Hairstylists, 3 Store Claire’s accessories, Sky TV services, The Sweet Factory, Zumo Juice Bar, St Canices Credit Union, Drum Youth Centre, An Post Centre and Wi-Fi is freely available. Also located at the Centre, which hosts 1,100 multi storey Car Park spaces, is the FAS employment and the HSA.

The main eating area is known as The Workhouse Square. This is a covered outdoor space with access from the main street via the Hebron Road and also from the shopping mall itself. The restaurants include The Courtyard Bar & Grill, Quigleys, BB’s Coffee & Muffins, Costa Coffee, O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar & Bagel Factory. Workhouse Square is also an events space which hosts musical performances and on the first Sunday of every month the Workhouse Crafts Fair.

The Goods Shed Market is the newest development within the centre; it is located opposite the main entrance near Eddie Rockets and KBowl. This is a unique concept designed to provide retail space for small start up business. The retailers include Kilkenny Formal suit hire, The Hurley Depot for hurleys & accessories, Coral Bay fish pedicure, Pottery Shed – pottery decorating, Treats Cafe, Belgian Chocolate Corner, Interiors for You – blinds and curtain specialists, Club Shop – embroidery, JK Key cutting, the Sewing Room for alterations & dry cleaning and Reflex Printing for printing design & gifts.,

The heritage and historical aspects of the restored workhouse buildings, the renovated railway buildings, the famine memorial garden and the Kilkenny time capsule, are unique to MacDonagh Junction, adding further to Kilkenny’s rich historical legacy. These aspects are detailed and laid out on a display in Workhouse Square beside BB’s Coffee & Muffins.
